Over the last eighteen months, Ashton International College has become one of the schools of choice on the North Coast. After being selected as a host venue for the FIFA World Cup in 2010, the Cambridge Field was upgraded to FIFA Standard with irrigation systems, maintenance equipment and floodlights. The floodlights were purchased by the school and the rehabilitation programme of the field is currently well in progress, and should be completed by the start of the summer season.
The Ashtonian Sports Café which was opened in July 2010 has proven to be a tremendous asset to the school, ensuring that students and parents can enjoy anything from home-made biscuits to nourishing meals. Housed in the same complex, are two modern change rooms, a uniform shop, two classrooms and offices for the Sports Coordinators. The most recent addition to this facility was the addition of a 200m² covered deck, with storm blinds sponsored by Lifestyle Centre, Ballito. This has created a popular area for spectators during the sports events, formal functions and for students during lunch.
The ten-lane swimming pool was fitted with blankets and a heating system was installed, enabling swimming training to continue throughout the cold winter months.
The Astroturf action arena serves as a venue for action netball, cricket, indoor hockey and soccer. The Oxford Field was upgraded to a full size field, and currently earthworks are being completed to extend the field to add two netball courts.
2011 saw Ashton open the doors of the new Ashlings Early learning Centre to accommodate the three Grade R classes. Each classroom has it’s own ablution facility, and sports it’s very own computer centre used by students from Grade 00 – Grade R. Soil is currently being cleared at the rear of the Ashlings garden for construction of a further two classrooms.
The new Science and Information technology Centre accommodates two Science Laboratories, complying with the internationally accredited Cambridge International Examination standards. The Centre has two additional classrooms as well as a dedicated Senior College Technology Centre.
Five additional classrooms in the Junior College were completed and taken into use at the start of the academic year, one being a dedicated Information Technology Centre for the Junior College, and four additional classrooms. This paved the way to create a third Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 class due to the demand and to accommodate current waiting lists.
Art students were surprised at the start of the year with a modern Art Centre. Construction started at the beginning of December and was completed in a record 2 month period. The foundations for seven additional classrooms, which will complete the requirements for the Senior College Phase, have been laid.
This will be the sixth building to be constructed since the beginning of March 2010, with a total of 4500m² over a period of two years.
