ACADEMIC FOCUS AND SUPPORT
As a South African school, we recognize the need to provide quality education for our students on their journey to excellence. We encourage students to work individually to help them to find independence. Our teachers are ever too busy to provide undivided attention to those who require it.
To assist students in maximising their academic potential we offer:
- Primary level education at Ashton Junior College which provides students with strong academic foundations for successful completion of the Cambridge/IEB curriculum in the Senior College.
- Supervised afternoon help sessions and extra individual tuition if required, at no cost.
- Study sessions which enable senior students to pursue independent study projects and thereby develop self-discipline and a positive work ethic which stands them in good stead with University studies.
(FORM 1 (Gr 8) – Form 5 (Gr 12))
At Ashton we believe that the parents and students have the right to choose, thus we offer the following:
Form 1 students (Gr 8) will be introduced to a combination of Cambridge (CAIE) and IEB Curricula. Students who qualify (60% and above, but we strongly recommend 70% and above) can choose the option of following the IGCSE Cambridge Curriculum or otherwise follow the IEB Curriculum. If the Cambridge Curriculum is followed, the students will write an External Examination at the end of Form 3 (Gr 10). There will be additional costs payable to Cambridge University. All subject combinations are regulated by the demand for the particular subject. The Subjects offered by the College include:

Ashton Junior College consists of three phase specific schools, made up of the Ashlings Early Learning Centre, the Foundation Phase and the Intersen Phase. Unique to Ashton is our specialised autism unit, the Grace Wing.
THE GRACE WING AT ASHLINGS (Ages 3 - 6)
The Grace Wing is a specialised wing sheltered in the gardens of the Ashlings Early Learning Centre, catering for students on the autisim spectrum. Currently we cater for students aged 3 - 6. The Grace Wing delivers an adapted and autisim-specific curriculum, using an eclectic blend of world’s best practice in educating students on the spectrum. At Ashton, we believe that every child deserves to reach their highest possible potential, therefore The Grace Wing provides a highly structured environment suited to the learning profiles of our students, who, as they grow and achieve, work towards full-time inclusion within the mainstream classes.
THE ASHLINGS EARLY LEARNING CENTRE (Grade 0000 - R)
Our Pre-school groups range from Grade 0000 through to Grade R, enabling us to cater for 3 to 6 year olds. The classrooms are fully equipped with games and teaching materials, which enable our teachers to provide a stimulating and creative atmosphere, in which students are guided and encouraged, through a rich hands-on experience, to develop optimally.
GRADE 1 – 3 (Foundation Phase)
Ashton’s introduction to formal learning is a happy and exciting one. We believe in nurturing the individual and supporting different learning styles. Students in this part of their studies are exposed to a rich and varied curriculum, embracing many aspects of the IEB and Cambridge Curricula. We encourage creative thinkers and instill a love for the arts, culture and sport.
GRADE 4 – 7 (Intersen Phase)
The Intersen Phase dovetails the South African national Curriculum Statement with the rich Cambridge International Primary Checkpoint Programme. The Grade 6’s, in their last year of the intermediate phase, write the Primary Checkpoint external examinations in English, Mathematics and Science.
In this phase, there is strong focus on developing and maintaining a strong work ethic while encouraging a growth mindset which promotes critical thinking skills.
The following core subjects are offered:
• English (Home Language)
• Afrikaans (1st Additional Language)
• Natural Science
